With help of INGV, DLR and DPC, BRGM has produced leaflets dedicated to increase awareness of young students in several languages. The leaflets are downloadable on-line (links below) and a poster version has also been implemented for school classes. The aim of this material is not to give an exhaustive presentation of the volcanoes and their risks but more to awaken pupil’s curiosity and increase their awareness.
The content is based on MED-SUV targeted volcanoes and has been defined according to the preliminary results from school activities performed by UGR partner in Granada. These activities showed that more than 90% of the 124 pupils interrogated represent volcanoes with a conic shape. Thus the leaflet and the poster start with volcano shapes, showing with the example of the Phlegrean fields that volcanoes can have other shapes than cones :
The different volcanic hazards are presented then as a major part of this educational material and short text of explanation are given in the leaflet. For some hazards, an illustration of potential risk is also presented :
Then a simplified eruptive history of MEDSUV targeted volcanoes is represented to illustrate the time scale involved in volcano life. And finally volcano monitoring systems are presented as well as some advice on how to get prepared to an eruption.
The leaflet and poster are available in 6 languages :
|Leaflet for electronic use||Leaflet to print||A1 Poster|
Guidelines for printing :
The leaflet is designed for A5 format so you can print it on 2 “A4” sheet and then fold it. Be sure to unselect “smooth line art” (Edit/Preferences/ Page display) and to select “Landscape format”, “Binding on the left” and adjust to format as printing options.
